Along the Knife Edge: 2,000' Drop Both Sides! 1971

October 23, 2006
Photo by Tom Cocks, who was the Lead Counselor on this trip, which he had previously done three years as a Counselor and one as a camper. Tom recalls that the Counselor in his photo is Nigel Draffen, out of Great Britain, with experience in Outward Bound in Kilimanjaro in Kenya. This is the view on the trail of what is called The Knife Edge, coming down from the summit of Mt. Katahdin, in Baxter State Park in Maine.
Tom's photo reveals that he relegated the Lead position to Nigel so he (Tom) could become trip photographer. Tom notes that there is a 2,000 foot drop on either side of the trail, which rightfully had some of the 12-year-old hikers a bit nervous. Nigel seems to be pausing to urge one of the kiddies to "look at the trail, not down." In spite of slippery, loose shale and jutting boulders to negotiate, everyone made the descent safely.
